Breast Augmentation Recovery Time: How Long to Stay in Korea and When to Fly

Short answer: most people recover from breast augmentation in one to two weeks, with the worst pain in the first 48 hours (The Aesthetic Society). Stitches come out after one or two weeks, and most normal activities are possible after six weeks (NHS). The NHS advises not flying for five to seven days after breast surgery. For a trip to Korea, plan about one to two weeks after surgery, ending with a check by your surgeon.

Breast augmentation recovery timeline First two weeks: most pain in the first 48 hours, drains out after a few days, NHS advises no flying for 5 to 7 days, no driving for at least a week, stitches out after 1 to 2 weeks. Later: most swelling gone within a month, no heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for at least a month, most normal activities at 6 weeks, a more natural look after a few months. Breast augmentation recovery timeline Typical ranges from NHS, The Aesthetic Society and ASPS. Your surgeon's plan comes first. The first two weeks

When What usually happens What it means for your trip
Day 0 The operation takes 60 to 90 minutes (NHS). Many people go home the same day (ASPS). Have someone with you for the first night.
Days 0 to 2 Most pain is in the first 48 hours, and the chest can feel stiff and sore for two to five days (The Aesthetic Society). Rest at the hotel. Sleep inclined at 25 to 45 degrees if advised, and walk a few minutes every few hours to lower clot risk.
A few days Dressings and any drains are removed a few days after surgery (The Aesthetic Society). Expect a clinic visit.
Days 5 to 7 The NHS advises not flying for five to seven days after breast surgery. Do not plan a flight in this window.
Days 7 to 14 External stitches come out after about one week (The Aesthetic Society) or one to two weeks (NHS). No driving for at least one week (NHS). Light outings. Ask about your cleared-to-fly date.

What the research says about timing of problems

  • Bleeding (haematoma): in 1,128 Danish breast augmentation patients, 2.7 percent had a haematoma, usually within the first day (median 14 hours, range 5 hours to 9 days) (Hemmingsen et al., 2022).
  • Deep infection: 0.5 percent in the same study, appearing at a median of 14 days and up to 41 days. Many of these would start after you are home, so arrange a contact at your clinic and a doctor at home.
  • Blood clots: in 129,007 cosmetic surgery patients, clots after breast-only surgery were very rare, about 0.01 percent within 30 days. Combined procedures carried a higher risk (Winocour et al., 2017).

One practice in Greece and the UK reported 618 women who flew within 48 hours of breast augmentation under a strict protocol without clots or haematomas (Keramidas et al., 2026). It is a single practice’s report and does not cover long-haul flights such as Korea to Europe or the US.

After you are home

  • Work: a few days to a week depending on the job (The Aesthetic Society), or a week or two (NHS).
  • Lifting and exercise: avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for at least a month (NHS).
  • Support bra: some surgeons recommend a sports bra day and night for up to three months (NHS). Ask yours.
  • Shape: most residual swelling resolves within a month (The Aesthetic Society), and the breasts start to look and feel more natural after a few months (NHS).

What travel guidelines say about flying home

Two UK sources give advice for people who have surgery abroad. Neither comes from a trial, and both leave the final decision to your surgeon.

  • NHS: air travel and major surgery both raise the risk of a blood clot. The NHS recommends not flying for 5 to 7 days after procedures such as breast surgery and liposuction.
  • British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), 2023: when total travel time is around four hours or more, which covers any flight home from Korea to Europe, North America or Australia, people having a general anaesthetic of up to three hours should arrive at least 72 hours before surgery and stay one to two weeks after it. For operations over three hours, surgery on several areas, or a higher clot risk, BAAPS advises arriving a week before and staying two to four weeks after. BAAPS labels this guidance expert opinion.
  • Before you leave: BAAPS asks for at least one review by the surgeon who operated on you before you travel home, and phone or video follow-up once you are back.
  • On the plane: BAAPS recommends an aisle seat, plenty of water, walking during the flight and compression stockings.

A sample 10 to 14-day plan for Korea

Days Plan
Day −3 to −1 Arrive at least 72 hours before surgery (BAAPS, for long-haul travel). Consultation and implant sizing.
Day 0 to 2 Surgery, then rest. Short walks every few hours.
Day 3 to 7 Drain or dressing check. Quiet indoor time.
Day 7 to 10 Stitch removal or wound check. Light outings without lifting bags.
Day 10 to 14 Final review by your surgeon, then fly home with stockings, an aisle seat and help with luggage.

Replace every date with the ones your clinic gives you. The Clinic KR trip planner lays them out day by day and flags a flight that is booked too early.

Questions to ask your clinic before you book flights

  1. Will I have drains, and when do they come out?
  2. Are my stitches dissolvable, or do they need removing?
  3. From which date am I cleared to fly, and should I wear compression stockings?
  4. How long should I wear the support bra?
  5. Can I have my implant details, operation record and prescriptions in English?
  6. Who do I contact from home if one breast swells or I get a fever?
