Facelift and Neck Lift Recovery Time: Day-by-Day Plan for a Trip to Korea

Short answer: after a facelift, drains usually come out in one to two days and stitches in five to ten days (AAFPRS). Bruising and swelling peak at 36 to 48 hours and subside over 10 to 14 days (The Aesthetic Society), and most people are presentable at 10 to 14 days (ASPS). The NHS advises not flying for 7 to 10 days after facial procedures. For Korea, plan about two weeks after surgery, or longer for a long or combined operation.

Facelift and neck lift recovery timeline First two weeks: bleeding risk highest in the first 48 hours, drains and dressing off at 1 to 2 days, swelling peaks at 36 to 48 hours, stitches out at 5 to 10 days, NHS advises no flying for 7 to 10 days, presentable at 10 to 14 days. Later: no strenuous exercise for a month, feels normal at 2 to 3 months, final result at 6 months or more, numbness can take 9 to 12 months. The first two weeks

When What usually happens What it means for your trip
Day 0 to 2 The dressing and drains usually come off on day one or two (AAFPRS, The Aesthetic Society). Bruising and swelling peak at 36 to 48 hours. An adult should stay with you for at least the first 24 hours (AAFPRS). Usually an overnight stay (NHS). Do not travel alone.
Days 3 to 7 No bending or heavy lifting for a week, and no driving for at least a week (The Aesthetic Society). Rest at the hotel, short indoor walks.
Days 5 to 10 Stitches and staples are usually removed within five to ten days (AAFPRS). The NHS says 7 to 14 days. The key clinic visit. Book it before your flight.
Days 10 to 14 Swelling and bruising subside (The Aesthetic Society). Most people are presentable at 10 to 14 days (ASPS). Light outings, if your clinic agrees.

Timing matters for bleeding. In 1,236 consecutive facelifts, 1.86 percent had a haematoma needing surgery, and all of them happened within 48 hours, more than half in the first 15 hours (Rees et al., 1994). A larger 2016 study of 11,300 facelifts found major complications in 1.8 percent within 30 days, with a higher haematoma risk in men (Gupta et al.). Blood clots in the legs or lungs are rare, but risk rises with long and combined operations: in one center, both clots followed combined procedures, and risk increased for operations over five hours (Abboushi et al., 2012).

Neck lift alone

A neck lift without a facelift usually has a shorter recovery of one to two weeks. The neck dressing stays for the first 24 hours, bruising resolves over four to five days, and most people return to normal activities after two weeks (The Aesthetic Society). Tightness and numbness can last several months.

After you are home

  • Exercise: no swimming or strenuous athletics for at least a month, and ease back into your full routine after two months (The Aesthetic Society).
  • How it feels: it takes two to three months for the face to feel back to normal (ASPS).
  • Final result: at least six months to heal completely (The Aesthetic Society). The NHS says the full effect can take six to nine months.
  • Numbness: usually resolves after 9 to 12 months (BAAPS).
  • Scars: take at least a year to reach their final look (The Aesthetic Society).

What travel guidelines say about flying home

Two UK sources give advice for people who have surgery abroad. Neither comes from a trial, and both leave the final decision to your surgeon.

  • NHS: air travel and major surgery both raise the risk of a blood clot. The NHS recommends not flying for 7 to 10 days after facial cosmetic procedures.
  • British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), 2023: when total travel time is around four hours or more, which covers any flight home from Korea to Europe, North America or Australia, people having a general anaesthetic of up to three hours should arrive at least 72 hours before surgery and stay one to two weeks after it. For operations over three hours, surgery on several areas, or a higher clot risk, BAAPS advises arriving a week before and staying two to four weeks after. BAAPS labels this guidance expert opinion.
  • Before you leave: BAAPS asks for at least one review by the surgeon who operated on you before you travel home, and phone or video follow-up once you are back.
  • On the plane: BAAPS recommends an aisle seat, plenty of water, walking during the flight and compression stockings.

A facelift under general anaesthetic that lasts more than three hours, or is combined with other procedures, falls into the BAAPS group that should arrive a week before surgery and stay two to four weeks after.

A sample 14-day plan for Korea

Days Plan
Day −3 or earlier Arrive at least 72 hours before surgery, or a week before for a long or combined operation (BAAPS).
Day 0 to 2 Surgery and overnight stay, drain removal, then rest with a companion.
Day 3 to 7 Quiet days at the hotel. Head raised and no bending, as instructed.
Day 5 to 10 Stitch and staple removal visit.
Day 10 to 14 Short outings if your clinic agrees. Final review, then fly with stockings and an aisle seat.

Replace every date with the ones your clinic gives you. The Clinic KR trip planner lays them out day by day and flags a flight that is booked too early.

Questions to ask your clinic before you book flights

  1. How long will my operation take, and will it be combined with anything else?
  2. Will I stay overnight, and when do the drains come out?
  3. On which days are the stitches and staples removed?
  4. From which date am I cleared to fly, and do you recommend stockings or blood thinners?
  5. Can I have my operation record and prescriptions in English?
  6. Who do I contact from home if one side swells suddenly or I feel short of breath?
