Dermal Filler in Korea: Swelling Timeline, Aftercare and Trip Planning

Short answer: redness, swelling and bruising after filler usually clear within 7 to 14 days (American Academy of Dermatology). In an FDA trial of a lip filler, about 81 percent of people who had swelling were back to normal within a week, and the rest took 8 to 30 days. Avoid strenuous exercise until the next day, and heat or strong sun for 24 hours. No medical source gives a waiting time before flying after filler. For a trip, have filler early so the swelling can settle and you can be checked again before you leave.

After filler: what to avoid and how long swelling lasts Exercise: wait until the next day. Heat and strong sun: minimise for 24 hours. Touching the area: avoid for 3 days unless told to massage. Lip swelling: gone within a week in 81 percent of people who had it, 8 to 30 days in the rest. Redness and bruising in all areas: usually clear in 7 to 14 days. In the lip trial 62 percent had a touch-up at one month. After filler: what to avoid and how long swelling lasts Day 0 is the treatment day. How filler works

Dermal filler is a gel injected under the skin to restore volume, shape lips or soften folds. Most fillers used for lips and lines are hyaluronic acid gels. Botulinum toxin is different: it relaxes muscles rather than adding volume. Clinics in Korea commonly use the same hyaluronic acid filler brands sold internationally, alongside Korean-made products. Ask which product and how many millilitres you received, and get it in writing.

The first two weeks after filler

When What usually happens What it means for your trip
Treatment day Makeup can usually go on before you leave the clinic (AAD). Minimise strenuous exercise, sun and heat for 24 hours (FDA lip filler label). Skip the sauna, jjimjilbang and a long sunny walk that day.
Days 1 to 3 Swelling is at its most visible. Avoid touching the treated area for three days unless you are told to massage it (AAD). Plan indoor activities and avoid face-down massage.
Days 4 to 7 Lip swelling had gone within a week in about 81 percent of those who had it in the FDA trial. Most people look normal by now.
Days 8 to 14 Redness, swelling and bruising usually clear within 7 to 14 days (AAD). Best time to judge the shape and ask about a touch-up.

In the lip filler trial, 62 percent of people had a touch-up one month after the first treatment. If you want the option of a touch-up in Korea, ask whether your clinic can do it within your stay, or plan to have it on a later trip.

How long filler lasts

It depends mainly on the product (AAD): hyaluronic acid gel 4 to 12 months, calcium hydroxylapatite 6 months to a year, poly-L-lactic acid 1 to 3 years with results appearing over two or three weeks, and PMMA is permanent. In the FDA lip trial, results lasted a year in more than 60 percent of people.

Warning signs and late reactions

  • Blocked blood vessel: the most serious early risk. Contact the clinic at once for unusual pain, vision changes, or skin near the injection that turns white, grey or blue (FDA). A survey of 1.7 million syringes found about 1 occlusion per 6,410 syringes injected with a needle and 1 per 40,882 with a blunt cannula, with lips and nasolabial folds most often affected (Alam et al., 2021).
  • Delayed lumps or swelling: these can appear weeks, months or years later, sometimes after an infection, vaccination or dental work (FDA). A 2026 review put delayed inflammatory reactions at about 1 per 2,000 patients per year, starting at a median of three months (Seo et al.). That is usually after you are home, so keep the product name and your clinic’s contact.

How long to stay in Korea

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) groups procedures for people who travel abroad. Treatments done under local anaesthetic in under 90 minutes are in its lowest group, with no extra time in the destination country needed for travel reasons. The NHS advice about waiting before flying is written for surgery, not for treatments like this one.

So what decides the length of your stay is the treatment itself: letting swelling settle, and ideally one check before you fly. Treat early in the trip: by day 7 most lip swelling has gone, and by day 14 bruising has usually cleared. No medical source gives a waiting time before flying after filler. The NHS figures you may see quoted are for surgery.

A sample 5 to 7-day plan

Days Plan
Day 1 Arrive. Consultation, ideally a day before treatment.
Day 2 Filler. A quiet evening, no sauna or heavy exercise.
Days 3 to 5 Indoor sightseeing while swelling settles. Avoid pressing on the area.
Days 6 to 7 Check with the clinic if offered, then fly home with the product details in writing.

Replace every date with the ones your clinic gives you. The Clinic KR trip planner lays them out day by day and flags a flight that is booked too early.

Questions to ask your clinic before you book flights

  1. Which product will you use, how many millilitres, and can I have the batch label?
  2. Will you inject with a needle or a cannula?
  3. Can I come back for a check or touch-up before I leave Korea?
  4. Should I avoid alcohol, and for how long?
  5. What should I do if I see white or blue skin or have severe pain after I am home?
  6. Do you have hyaluronidase on site?

FAQ

How long does lip filler swelling last?

In an FDA lip filler trial, swelling went down within a week in about 81 percent of people who had it, and took 8 to 30 days in the rest.

Can I fly after filler?

No medical society or regulator gives a waiting time before flying after filler, and we found no study on it. The NHS flying advice is for surgery. Ask your injector.

Can I drink alcohol after filler?
