Short answer: acne scars usually need three or more treatments (American Academy of Dermatology), spaced about four to seven weeks apart in studies. Downtime depends on the method: two to seven days for microneedling, about a week of redness after non-ablative fractional laser, and 10 to 21 days of healing after ablative laser resurfacing. A one or two-week trip therefore fits one session. A full course means repeat visits or continuing treatment at home.
Matching the method to the scar
Different scars need different treatment: ice pick scars are treated differently from rolling scars (AAD), and many plans combine methods. Treatment usually starts once active acne is under control. The British Association of Dermatologists says laser treatment should not be done for at least a year after finishing isotretinoin.
| Method | Often used for | Downtime | Sessions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subcision | Rolling scars | Temporary bruising and swelling; firm bumps can last longer (Alam 2005) | About 50 percent improvement in one study |
| TCA CROSS | Ice pick scars | Not reported in society sources | Good response in 82 to 94 percent of 65 patients (Lee 2002) |
| Microneedling | Rolling and boxcar scars | 2 to 7 days; makeup after 24 hours (ASDS) | At least three, monthly |
| RF microneedling | Rolling and boxcar scars, all skin tones (AAD) | Shorter redness than fractional laser in Asian trials (Dai 2017) | Usually three, about 4 weeks apart |
| Non-ablative fractional laser | Mild to moderate scars | No downtime per AAD; redness about a week in one trial | A few treatments; results take months |
| Fractional CO2 laser | Deeper scars | Crusting about 7 days, redness 11 days or more | Often three, about 7 weeks apart |
| Filler | Soft, rolling scars | Bruising up to a week (ASDS) | Lasts 3 months to 2 years |
Asian skin: the risk of temporary darkening
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a temporary darkening after treatment, is the main concern for Asian skin. In 13 Thai patients treated with fractional CO2, 92 percent had some darkening, which faded in about five weeks on average (Manuskiatti et al., 2010). A meta-analysis of six trials in Asian patients found RF microneedling and fractional laser improved scars similarly, but RF microneedling caused less darkening and shorter redness (Dai et al., 2017). The AAD advises limiting time outdoors during the day for six to eight weeks after laser treatment for scars.
How long to stay in Korea
The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) groups procedures for people who travel abroad. Treatments done under local anaesthetic in under 90 minutes are in its lowest group, with no extra time in the destination country needed for travel reasons. The NHS advice about waiting before flying is written for surgery, not for treatments like this one.
So what decides the length of your stay is the treatment itself: the downtime of your chosen method and the gap between sessions. Studies space sessions about four to seven weeks apart, so one trip usually fits one session. Plan your sightseeing for the days before treatment, since redness and crusting follow it, and pack high-factor sunscreen and a hat.
A sample 7-day plan for one session
| Days | Plan |
|---|---|
| Days 1 to 3 | Arrive, consultation and scar assessment. Do your outdoor sightseeing now. |
| Day 4 | Treatment. |
| Days 5 to 7 | Indoor days while redness and crusting settle, then fly home with written aftercare. |

Questions to ask your clinic before you book flights
- Which scar types do I have, and which methods do you recommend for each?
- How many sessions will I need, and how far apart?
- Can I continue the course at home with another dermatologist?
- How do you reduce the risk of darkening on my skin type?
- I took isotretinoin; how long ago does it need to be?
FAQ
How many acne scar treatments do I need?
Usually three or more (AAD), spaced about four to seven weeks apart.
What is the downtime for acne scar treatment?
From two to seven days for microneedling to 10 to 21 days of healing after ablative laser resurfacing.
Can I do a full acne scar course in one trip to Korea?
Usually not. Session gaps of four weeks or more mean one trip fits one session, unless you stay longer.
Is RF microneedling safe for Asian skin?
The AAD says RF microneedling is safe for all skin tones, and trials in Asian patients found less darkening than with fractional laser.
