Rhinoplasty Recovery Timeline: Day-by-Day Plan for a Trip to Korea

Short answer: after rhinoplasty, the nasal splint usually comes off after a week to ten days, and most bruising and swelling improves in ten to fourteen days, according to The Aesthetic Society. Swelling then keeps fading for months. In a Yale study, about two-thirds of it was gone at one month and 95 percent at six months. For a trip to Korea, plan your stay around your clinic’s splint-removal visit, and book your flight home only after your surgeon has cleared you to fly. The NHS advises not flying for 7 to 10 days after facial cosmetic procedures.

Rhinoplasty recovery timeline The first two weeks in Korea: nosebleeding in the first 24 hours, packing out within 4 to 7 days, splint off at 7 to 10 days, most bruising and swelling better by 10 to 14 days. After you go home: normal activities including exercise within about 3 weeks, two-thirds of swelling gone at 1 month, 95 percent at 6 months, 97.5 percent at 1 year. The first two weeks, day by day

These are the stages most people go through while they are still near their clinic. The ranges come from The Aesthetic Society’s patient guide unless another source is named. Your own clinic may use a different splint, packing, or schedule.

When What usually happens What it means for your trip
Day 0 to 1 Some nosebleeding in the first 24 hours is normal. Plan nothing for the surgery day and the day after. Stay near your hotel.
Days 4 to 7 Any packing inside the nose is removed within four to seven days. Expect a clinic visit in this window if you have packing.
Days 7 to 10 The splint and bandages on the nose come off. This is the visit most trips are built around. Book it before you book your flight.
Days 10 to 14 Most bruising and swelling improves. Heavy bruising can take three weeks. Short, low-effort outings usually become realistic, if your clinic agrees.

One more number matters for travel. In a 2025 study of 1,775 septorhinoplasty patients in Istanbul, 28 people (1.6 percent) had a bleeding episode after surgery. It happened between day 1 and day 9, most often around day 6 (Karaca et al., Journal of Craniofacial Surgery). All of them were managed without going back to the operating room. Bleeding was uncommon, but the timing is a good reason to stay close to your clinic through the first week and a half.

Weeks 3 to 12: usually after you are home

  • Exercise: most normal activities, including exercise, can usually resume within three weeks. Ask before contact sports or heavy lifting.
  • Glasses: you may need to wait a while before resting glasses on your nose without support. Bring contact lenses if you can wear them.
  • Sun: The Aesthetic Society says to wait a few months before exposing the reshaped nose to direct sunlight. Pack a wide-brimmed hat for sightseeing in Korea.
  • How it looks: minor swelling can last up to a year, but it is unlikely to be noticeable to others after about a month.

The first year: why your nose keeps changing

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says initial swelling subsides within a few weeks, but it may take up to a year for the new shape to fully refine. Swelling can also come and go, and look worse in the morning, during that first year.

Two 3D-imaging studies put numbers on this:

  • Yale, 2016: measured 40 open rhinoplasty patients with 3D photos. About two-thirds of the swelling was gone at one month, 95 percent at six months and 97.5 percent at one year.
  • Technical University of Munich, 2024: scanned 29 patients at one, three and six months. The authors concluded that swelling takes at least six months, or longer, to go down completely.

So the nose you see when you fly home is not the final result. Plan your photos and any judgment about the outcome for months later, not the end of your trip.

When can you fly after rhinoplasty?

There is no published study that sets a safe day to fly after rhinoplasty. We searched medical journals and the patient guides of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and The Aesthetic Society, and none of them gives a flying date. The NHS gives general advice for facial procedures, covered below. Advice published by individual surgeons ranges from about two days to three weeks, which shows how much it depends on the surgeon and the operation.

What is known:

  • Airliner cabins are pressurized to the equivalent of no more than 8,000 feet (about 2,400 m) under US aircraft rules, so air in the sinuses expands during the flight.
  • Late bleeding, when it happened in the Istanbul study, came between days 1 and 9.
  • Splints and packing usually come out in the first ten days, at the clinic.

Put together, it makes sense to plan at least one clinic check after the splint comes off before you fly. Ask your surgeon for a clear “cleared to fly from” date, and ask whether you need a letter for the airline.

What travel guidelines say about flying home

Two UK sources give advice for people who have surgery abroad. Neither comes from a trial, and both leave the final decision to your surgeon.

  • NHS: air travel and major surgery both raise the risk of a blood clot. The NHS recommends not flying for 7 to 10 days after facial cosmetic procedures.
  • British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), 2023: when total travel time is around four hours or more, which covers any flight home from Korea to Europe, North America or Australia, people having a general anaesthetic of up to three hours should arrive at least 72 hours before surgery and stay one to two weeks after it. For operations over three hours, surgery on several areas, or a higher clot risk, BAAPS advises arriving a week before and staying two to four weeks after. BAAPS labels this guidance expert opinion.
  • Before you leave: BAAPS asks for at least one review by the surgeon who operated on you before you travel home, and phone or video follow-up once you are back.
  • On the plane: BAAPS recommends an aisle seat, plenty of water, walking during the flight and compression stockings.

A sample 14-day plan for Korea

This is an example of how a trip can be laid out if your clinic’s dates follow the typical ranges above. Replace every date with the ones your clinic gives you. The Clinic KR trip planner does this for you and flags a flight that is booked too early.

Days Plan
Arrival, then Day −1 Arrive at least one day early. Consultation and pre-surgery checks.
Day 0 to 3 Surgery, then rest at the hotel. Follow the clinic’s aftercare sheet.
Day 4 to 7 Clinic check or packing removal. Quiet indoor time: a nearby café, a short walk in a shopping mall.
Day 7 to 10 Splint removal visit. Light indoor outings such as the National Museum of Korea or Starfield Library at COEX.
Day 10 to 13 Short outings with sun protection, if your clinic agrees. Ask for your “cleared to fly” date and your records.
Day 14 Earliest realistic flight home in this example, only if your surgeon has cleared you.

Questions to ask your clinic before you book flights

  1. Will I have internal packing or splints, and on which day will each come out?
  2. How many follow-up visits do you need before I leave Korea?
  3. From which date am I cleared to fly, and do I need a letter for the airline?
  4. Until when should I stay mostly indoors, and when can I go out in the sun?
  5. Can you give me my operation record and prescriptions in English?
  6. Who do I contact after I am home if I have bleeding or a question?

FAQ

How long should I stay in Korea for rhinoplasty?

Long enough to attend the splint-removal visit and any follow-up your surgeon asks for, and to reach the date they clear you to fly. With the typical splint removal at seven to ten days, that often means about two weeks. Your surgeon may ask for more or less.

When does rhinoplasty swelling go down?

Most visible bruising and swelling improves in ten to fourteen days. In 3D studies, about two-thirds of the swelling was gone at one month and 95 percent at six months, with small changes up to a year.

Can I go sightseeing a few days after rhinoplasty?

Usually only light, indoor outings in the first week, and only if your clinic agrees. Avoid crowds where your nose could be bumped, and keep the nose out of direct sun.

Is it safe to fly one week after rhinoplasty?

No study sets a safe flying day. The NHS advises waiting 7 to 10 days after facial cosmetic procedures, and BAAPS asks for a review by your surgeon before you travel. Only your surgeon can clear you.
