Liposuction Recovery Time: Compression, Blood Clots and Flying Home from Korea

Short answer: after liposuction, you should start walking the day after surgery (AAD), wear a compression garment day and night for at least two weeks and then by day for another four to six weeks (BAAPS), and expect bruising to last about a month. The NHS advises not flying for five to seven days. For a trip to Korea, plan one to two weeks after surgery, longer for large-volume or multi-area liposuction.

Liposuction recovery timeline First two weeks: walking from the day after surgery, NHS advises no flying for 5 to 7 days, stitches out after about a week, compression garment day and night for at least two weeks. Later: gentle exercise at 3 to 4 weeks, bruising mostly gone in about a month, strenuous activity after 10 to 12 weeks, area settled by up to 6 months. Liposuction recovery timeline Typical ranges from NHS, BAAPS, ASPS and AAD. Your surgeon's plan comes first. The first two weeks

When What usually happens What it means for your trip
Day 0 to 1 Start walking the day after surgery to lower the risk of blood clots (AAD). Most serious complications show up early: in a German review of 72 severe cases, 57 were evident within 24 hours (Lehnhardt et al., 2008). Stay near the clinic and have someone with you.
Week 1 Significantly limit your activity (ASPS). Stitches come out after about a week (NHS). Hotel rest with short walks. One clinic visit.
Days 5 to 7 The NHS advises not flying for five to seven days after liposuction. No flights in this window.
Weeks 1 to 2 Compression garment day and night, except in the shower (BAAPS). Pack loose clothes that fit over the garment.

Blood clots: the risk that matters for travel

Blood clots in the legs or lungs are the main reason for caution about long flights after liposuction. In 129,007 cosmetic surgery patients, clots occurred in 0.09 percent within 30 days. Body procedures carried a higher rate of 0.21 percent, and combined procedures 0.20 percent against 0.04 percent for single procedures (Winocour et al., 2017). In 31,010 liposuction cases, liposuction alone had a major complication rate of 0.7 percent and a confirmed clot rate of 0.06 percent, while combining it with other operations raised the clot risk about five-fold (Kaoutzanis et al., 2017).

A 2026 UK review of 198 people treated by the NHS for complications after cosmetic surgery abroad listed premature air travel as a contributing factor in 5 percent of cases (Goodarzi et al.).

After you are home

  • Work: a few days for small-volume liposuction (BAAPS, AAD), or weeks two to three depending on the job (ASPS).
  • Compression: by day for another four to six weeks after the first two (BAAPS).
  • Exercise: gentle exercise at three to four weeks, nothing strenuous for 10 to 12 weeks (NHS, BAAPS).
  • Bruising and swelling: bruising is usually visible for about a month (BAAPS). Swelling can take up to six months to settle (NHS).
  • Numbness: should go in six to eight weeks (NHS).
  • Final shape: within one to six months (BAAPS).

What travel guidelines say about flying home

Two UK sources give advice for people who have surgery abroad. Neither comes from a trial, and both leave the final decision to your surgeon.

  • NHS: air travel and major surgery both raise the risk of a blood clot. The NHS recommends not flying for 5 to 7 days after procedures such as breast surgery and liposuction.
  • British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), 2023: when total travel time is around four hours or more, which covers any flight home from Korea to Europe, North America or Australia, people having a general anaesthetic of up to three hours should arrive at least 72 hours before surgery and stay one to two weeks after it. For operations over three hours, surgery on several areas, or a higher clot risk, BAAPS advises arriving a week before and staying two to four weeks after. BAAPS labels this guidance expert opinion.
  • Before you leave: BAAPS asks for at least one review by the surgeon who operated on you before you travel home, and phone or video follow-up once you are back.
  • On the plane: BAAPS recommends an aisle seat, plenty of water, walking during the flight and compression stockings.

Liposuction of several areas, or combined with other operations, fits the BAAPS group that should arrive a week before surgery and stay two to four weeks after.

A sample 10 to 14-day plan for Korea

Days Plan
Day −3 or earlier Arrive at least 72 hours before surgery, or a week before for multi-area liposuction (BAAPS).
Day 0 to 2 Surgery, then rest with short walks every few hours.
Day 3 to 7 Garment day and night. Stitch removal at about a week.
Day 8 to 11 Light, flat walks if your clinic agrees: a museum, a covered shopping street.
Day 12 to 14 Final review, then fly with stockings or your garment, an aisle seat, water and regular walks.

Replace every date with the ones your clinic gives you. The Clinic KR trip planner lays them out day by day and flags a flight that is booked too early.

Questions to ask your clinic before you book flights

  1. How many areas and how much fat will be removed, and will it be combined with anything else?
  2. How long should I wear the compression garment day and night, and then by day?
  3. Do you recommend stockings or a blood thinner for the flight?
  4. From which date am I cleared to fly?
  5. Can I have my operation record and prescriptions in English?
  6. Who do I contact from home if a leg swells or I feel short of breath?

FAQ

How long should I stay in Korea for liposuction?

One to two weeks after surgery under BAAPS guidance for operations up to three hours, and two to four weeks for multi-area or combined surgery.

When can I fly after liposuction?

The NHS advises waiting five to seven days. No study sets a safe day, and long flights add to clot risk. Your surgeon decides.

How long do I wear compression after liposuction?

BAAPS says day and night for at least two weeks, then during the day for another four to six weeks.

When will I see the final result of liposuction?

The shape settles over one to six months, and swelling can take up to six months to go completely.
